Yearly Low: Ethereum Gas Fees Boost ETH Burn

Published

Ethereum (ETH) saw a significant drop in daily value ETH burned, reaching an annual low mainly due to lower gasoline costs. Gas prices are currently between 5 and 10 gwei, one of the lowest levels seen this year.

The Ethereum network is seeing a notable decrease in the daily volume of ETH burned, reaching its lowest point this year, largely influenced by a recent drop in average gas fees. Currently, gas fees fluctuate between 5 and 10 gwei, which represents one of the lowest levels recorded since the beginning of the year and impacts the issuance of ETH.

Reducing network fees results in fewer ETH burned. On Sunday, only 610 ETH was burned, marking an all-time high for the year, while Ethereum gas fees remained minimal. In contrast, the daily volume of ETH burned in the first four months of this year has consistently exceeded 2,500 to 3,000 ETH.

The continued decline in gas fees is attributed in part to a shift in activity toward Layer 2 scaling solutions and increasing adoption of blob transactions introduced with the Dencun upgrade in March, which help to reduce transaction costs on layers 2.

The dynamics of gas fees and ETH burning are closely watched aspects of the network’s business model. Although low fees benefit network users, the recent decrease in ETH consumption impacts Ethereum’s deflationary characteristics.

The London hard fork, also known as EIP-1559, implemented in August 2021, fundamentally changed the pricing structure of Ethereum. The upgrade introduced base fees which are burned and priority fees acting as a tip to validators. Since base fees correlate with network usage, higher fees result in more ETH being removed from circulation via burning.

Over the past week, Ethereum’s supply has become inflationary, with a growth rate of 0.49%, contrasting with its previous deflationary trend, as reported by ultrason.money. If activity increases and more ETH is burned than is issued, Ethereum will return to a deflationary state.
